Clarence’s rambling . . .

Memories: When I was younger – I could remember anything, whether it happened or not. – Mark Twain

So we have been playing this game called Memory with our kids, and my 4 year old puts me to shame.  Actually, all my kids do . . . come to think of it.

Parenting:  If it was going to be easy, it never would have started with something called labour!  So, the other morning I am woken up by Rayne Grace, very early, whispering very quietly in my ear (cuz I guess you’re supposed to be asleep at this hour. . .) saying, “Daddy? . . . Daddy? Can you make spaghetti for me?”  I’m like “what? – Do I know you? – Sure I’ll get right on that.” Some people’s kids.

There are three ways to get something done: Do it yourself, hire someone to do it, or forbid your children to do it. Never fails. Actually – our kids awesome with stuff around the house – cuz when I can’t find my stuff, I ask the kids and they seem to know where just about anything is. . .

Why?: Whose idea was it to put an "S" in the word "lisp"? Sometimes when I read stories to the kids, just to mix it up a bit, I’ll start reading with a “lithp” like nothing is different and my kids will be looking at me like, “Are you sure you’re my dad?”.

Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale? Man – Karyn and finally bought a brand new mattress last fall and it is amazing! I travel all over the place sleeping in hotels with incredible beds (and otherwise), but never seem to sleep as well as at home, generally our population doubles sometime early in the AM, too.

Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over? It’s funny – whenever we eat anything really messy or tomatoey – we have always taken our kids shirts off - just to save the hassle. It’s even funnier now when we visit others at mealtimes - 2 seconds later and at least two of our kids have no shirts on!

Speaking of no shirts on. . . last summer Rayne Grace would ride her bike back and forth and back and forth in front of our house. One day she watched intently as some guy rode by on his bike with NO shirt on, and of course our 4 year old is a quick learner. Two seconds later she’s riding back and forth again with no shirt! How do you explain this kinda of stuff to a precious princess?

Our son Indio gave a speech the other day at school on great white sharks. It was kinda neat to help him procrastinate (is that possible?). He was to use cue cards to help him remember the major points of his speech – and he goes and writes his WHOLE speech on these little index cards and proceeds through a big stack during his speech!! Funny. He even had a couple of jokes worked into it. . .

The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four persons is suffering from some sort of mental illness. **Think of your three best friends, if they're okay, then it's you.

This just in – I guess . . . Death is hereditary.

Always and never are two words you should always remember never to use.

Writing: So – we are supposed to be submitting a magazine article again soon. Any ideas? For many who don’t know, Karyn and I have been writing magazine articles for the last 2 years on PARENTING! (Go figure – for those of you who know our family) We have covered a wide variety of issues and experiences so far. We also try to add a First Nations twist to it as well. It has been fun to write in a creative way, and be challenged to be relevant even in our kids understanding of life.

Food: Our kids still have no concept of what food is supposed to be eaten WHEN – like breakfast food at breakfast and so on. Skye will get up and beg for alpha-getti or something for himself, and then eat again a half hour later when everyone else does. Hotdogs and Mac and cheese are a breakfast favourite! Yes, we do oblige at times – like last week when the younger ones were eating chicken nuggets at breakfast. . .

Tune in next time for some perhaps more meaningful thoughts . . .

Go Sharks!

I came into Skye's room one night to check on him, long after putting him to bed, and here he is with Rayne Grace's clothes on!! And it was pitch dark! Skye just doing his thing i guess. . .

You gotta try this one!!! Hilarious for our family!

word colour mind trick1

So - I seen this somewhere and made one at home. You're supposed to say the colour of the word, and not the spelled word as fast as you can without mistakes. . .

Nearly impossible right - well Indy, Karyn & I were having a laugh with this cuz we could barely get through one column and then Rayne Grace rattles the whole thing off no problem whatsoever. Hilarious, when you think about it - coming from a 4 year old who can't read yet and sees this ONLY in colour!! Man it's funny having kids sometimes!

We are still alive here in God's country

Hey friends - It's been like forever since we've updated this spot!!! We are still here in Thunder Bay - alive and mostly well. What have we been up to? Well since the last update - we have been here in T Bay, our kids have been back to school for the fall. Karyn's family visited us from Oregon for a few days in the fall as well - quite a surprise for all of us! We had fun hosting them. Karyn and Clarence also travelled to Montreal to attend Rising Above - a national conference where we sang and Karyn spoke on some issues. Our family spent Christmas in the Red Lake area. Clarence and Karyn recently spent a weekend in Winnipeg together - it was a ton of fun. Our kids were in Red Lake for a few days too.

Clarence - continues to work for Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation in engineering with First Nations communities in the region and travels across the country side - missing his famiy terribly. Keeps busy with church leadership stuff, learning new music, youth centre stuff, busy family schedule, kids sports, etc, etc, and enjoying a most awesome cup of coffee every morning with his beloved wife.

Karyn - busy keeping us all on one page - being mommy, sister, wife, etc. - all in a most loving way! Loves to keep in touch with others around the city by helping with whatever she can! She also volunteers at the kids' school quite often. Karyn enjoys singing with Clarence for worship and at special events and also travelled to Montreal last fall for a speaking engagement at Rising Above - a national conference focusing on First Nations abuse issues.

Clarence Indio - is one cool big brother for Skye and Rayne Grace! He played fall soccer and also started hockey in October for the season. He plays forward and mostly right wing for DW Sports. Also loves to play road hockey in our driveway along with his brother and sister. He also is becoming an avid snowboarder as he got a new board for Christmas! Loch Lomond ski area is only 20 minutes away - so he's gone there quite often. Indio is in grade 5 this year and learning about the world around him. He learned that 1 in 5 people in the world today is Chinese - and he also knows that there are 5 members in our family - so his big question - which one of us is Chinese? He thinks it is his brother Skye??!! Indy turned 11 in March - we can't believe we have an 11 year old! He is now looking forward to soccer season and getting ready for the NHL playoff season - go Sharks!

David Skye - our middle spawn and one cool kid! ( and perhaps, our Chinese kid. . . !?) Skye is happy-go-lucky and most often has no clue what day it is - only that it is going to be fun! Skye is in grade ONE - a huge step from kindergarten and has learned to read English quite well! - not bad for a Chinese kid! He loved skating this year and playing hockey outside or mini-sticks in our basement with his siblings. Skye eats like crazy from the moment he gets up to the moment he crashes. He will make his own waffles, and then eat whatever we eat when we get up as well! Skye has taken swimming lessons - and failed miserably each time - but has the most fun of anyone at the bottom of the pool! He is also looking forward to yet another round of swimming lessons this spring and soccer as well. One recent conversation with Skye - "Daddy, what do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a policeman, cuz they have cool water guns, or I want to be one of those people at the grocery store that help you buy your food, cuz they got lots of money in the drawer - yup." Funny how their world seems to them. . . . Skye turned 7 in January.

Rayne Grace - our precious princess! She is attending school with the boys and loving junior kindergarten on Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays at St Pius X School. She absolutely loves people and has many friends wherever she goes. She is in ballet and tap dance class every week and also will start soccer and swimming soon again. She loves playing with Barbies and Polly Pockets and everything that goes with them. She got a huge doll house for Christmas and also a digital camera - so we'll have to show you some of her work.

We'll try to update a bit sooner next time - although if we updated based on the amount of interest shown on Xanga - we would probably never update - as we rarely ever hear from anyone anyways . . . which begs even more questions. . . but oh well.

August family fun

Hey friends, some more pics and excerpts from the Meekis family adventure this summer. Following our trip along Lake Superior, we headed west to Dryden for the family camp and music festival. Yet another fun time of camping with friends and family. Then we headed north to Red Lake and flew on to Deer Lake for a family celebration of my grandmothers birthday! Tons of fun visiting Clarence's extended family! We stayed for 4 days and had good flights getting in and out of Deer Lake, a remote community with no road access. Eventually we came back home to do our laundry and etc - just kidding. The next week our family traveled to Winnipeg for a few days to visit friends and family and relax with our kids - a very great time. A couple nights at hotels with pools and water slides, etc - we met up with seom friends from Red Lake and had adjoining rooms - a ton of fun - eight kids in all!!! Clarence's parents and brother were out too, and they broght our kids to Red Lake a day earlier so we could also celebrate our anniversary on the 24th of August - 11 years!!! doesnt seem like it already?! Yes - 11 years ago we got married on the west coast in Oregon. So we went out for some of Karyns favourite - Olivegarden, and dessert at another place. At the end of the week we headed to Red Lake again to pick some blueberries. Below are a few pics of some of this time period. Enjoy . . .

This is in Deer Lake at our family celebration fo rmy grandmother! 81 years (depending who you ask!?) She celebrates with 9 sons and daughters, 58 grandchildren, and 120+ great gradnchildren!! So you can imagine the number of people, and Clarence's mother comes from an even larger family. Just a few cousins. . .
